The second half of 2024 saw many wonderful displays of GAOS talent of all ages and skill sets. So many that we couldn't keep up!

In the summer, our young people treated over 640 audience members to TWENTY, a medley of song and dance from beloved musicals that have been performed in GAOS youth shows over the last 20 years. Scripted and directed by Frou-Frou, with musical direction by Philippe Berthoud, and mentorship from many more, young GAOS members showed us all that the future of GAOS is in safe hands... and feet!

September brought us Life Rolls Along, a special musical evening created by Özge Tunçalp, together with Aurélie Laporte and Empi Mörn, that wove songs from musicals by Stephen Sondheim with excerpts from the memoir You Could Make this Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith. With stunning performances by the singers and musicians and magnetic narration, the story captured our hearts and moved many to tears.

The GAOS panto - the second of 2024 - was back at its usual time in December and it was magical! Aladdin was a sell-out, wowing more than 3,800 people with catchy songs, terrible jokes, and a majestic magic carpet. The 3 Cs - Carrie Douglass-Rose, Caroline Crow, and Chelsea Middleton - oversaw an impressive cast, band, production team, and crew to bring Aladdin's Cave of Wonders to life!

Finally, we closed our year with a festive Carol Concert presented by the GAOS Choral Group under the baton of Chelsea Middleton, with beautiful accompaniment by Joan Cambitsis. Our first GAOS Christmas Market brought an array of treasures, designed, handmade, and curated by or members. And the mince pies were in as high demand as ever!

None of these shows would have been possible without the GAOS members who step up to produce, direct, perform, stage-manage, design the sets, props, costumes, lighting, sound, hair, and makeup, act as callers and prompts, run the bar, market the shows, sell the tickets, welcome our audiences at front of house, and perform the many, many more tasks that go into making a GAOS show,

We have plenty of exciting plans in 2025 and we can't do it without all of you!

Did I tell you I'm in a show?

It’s a type of musical comedy, we call it panto.

    'What’s a panto?' I hear you say...

Oh let me explain, but it might take all day.

From a story or classic fairy tale it takes its plot,

but we shake things up quite a lot.

There's a bloke in makeup and outrageous frocks

and a girl playing a boy who loves sweaty socks.

There’s a baddie who’s mean and makes the audience hiss and boo,

Oh! and there’s a random panda too!

A lass plays the part of Aladdin who is our hero,

    It’s a bit confusing, yeah I know!

There’s a genie, spirit and magical spells,

A FART with sound effects (but luckily no smells).

There's an emperor who is always pissed,

and a princess who yearns to be kissed.

There's singing and dancing, talented kids galore, and

the most amazing chorus and dancers you ever saw

There’s love and drama and terrible jokes,

and with cross-gender dressing it’s very woke.

The innuendo is off the scale,

with jokes about plums that never fail.

It’s a show with colour and sparkle and there’s lots of laughter,

and except for the baddie, everyone lives happily ever after.

There's also lots going on behind the scenes,

the stage crew is like a well-oiled machine.

The directors show us how to act,

the bigger the better, that’s a panto fact.

The choreographers show us how to move:

Step ball change, pirouette or funky groove.

Carrie put in a lot of work

'You can move your hips but please don't twerk!'

The MD also had her work cut out,

'Don't smile, watch me, sing out but don’t shout!'

The musicians add that extra wow,

with loads of talent and rhythmical know-how.

The production secretary keeps us all in check,

but if you mess up HQ, she'll break your neck!

The front of house and bar team look after the crowd,

after interval drinks they can get very loud.

The prompt helps with forgotten lines

and writes 'name of man' on her helpful signs.

The callers make sure we're not late

and those parent helpers are really great.

There are amazing sets and realistic props

and the costume team pull out all the stops.

Eyebrows need to be bold or so I’m told

by the makeup team who paint the Genie gold.

The sound crew makes sure they can hear at the back,

and deals with the sweaty socks that protect our mic packs.

When the baddie appears there's a lot of smoke,

it sometimes makes poor Chelsea choke.

The lighting team makes the carpet fly

and we see them all dance as we sing goodbye.

GAOS brings together folk from far and wide,

with many nationalities working side by side.

It’s sometimes exhausting but lots of fun,

and I thank each and everyone of you for what you have done.

The Committee is pleased to announce that the GAOS show for Christmas 2025 will be Elf the Musical, directed by Sarah Irwin and Mhairi Mac Donald, with Lorna Donkin as musical director.

This is a message from the directors: After four fun-filled years of pantomimes, GAOS is mixing things up with Elf the Musical, the hilarious and heart-warming musical based on the famous holiday film Elf starring Will Ferrell! The story follows Buddy, a human raised by elves at the North Pole, who travels to New York City to find his real father and discover where he truly belongs. Along the way, he spreads joy, laughter, and plenty of holiday magic.

Perfect for all ages and backgrounds, this show will have you smiling, singing, and laughing out loud. Whether you're new to the story or know it by heart, Elf is the perfect way to kick off the festive season. Don't miss out!

Auditions will take place in June, rehearsals will commence in September, and the shows are the first two weekends in December!
