Local (Swiss) societies 

GEDS - The Geneva English Drama Society was founded in 1933. It provides a diverse theatre programme with a wide variety of styles and periods. A typical season includes 3-4 full stage productions and 20 fortnightly staged playreadings, plus workshops and social events. The play readings normally attract 50-100 people, and provide onstage roles for both experienced and aspiring actors.

Theatre In English - This is your guide to the two amateur English-speaking theatre groups in Geneva, Switzerland, (Geneva English Drama Society and Geneva Amateur Operatic Society), the ticket office keeps you up-to-date on all English-speaking theatrical events.

Howard Productions - A leading promoter of professional English-speaking theatre in Geneva, typically with two productions per year: a summer outdoor production of a Shakespeare classic in the courtyard of a nearby château, and a winter production in Geneva, of plays by Arthur Miller or Shakespeare.

Simply Theatre - Simply Theatre Productions is the first professional English speaking theatre producing company resident in Switzerland. Our aim is to bring the quality of West End theatre to Switzerland without having to travel as far to see it. We aspire to re-ignite the excitement and passion of live theatrical entertainment choosing well-known established classics and producing them well: "Great plays, beautifully done". Cast in London's West End, and Geneva, our actors have a variety of theatrical, TV and film experiences in the UK and abroad.

The English Theatre Group of Zug - Since their first production in 1987, the English Theatre Group of Zug has staged some 50 performances of various types: classic musicals including Chicago, Oklahoma! and Kiss Me Kate, but also British pantos such as Cinderella and Mother Goose and - completing the list - smaller off Broadway musicals such as Inside Out.

The Village Players - Organise regular activities each month in a club house at Chalet a Gobet and have two productions a year in theatres in the Lausanne area.

Zurich Comedy Club - The Zurich Comedy Club is the home of English Theatre in Zurich. It has a history of over 50 years, starting in 1954. It stages not just comedies, but Shakespearean dramas (eg Much Ado about Nothing), Historical and biographical dramas (eg Amadeus), Pantomimes (eg Wind in the Willows) Music & Dance (eg Stepping Out) and Victorian Music Hall. It does 2 major productions per year (May & November) in a 500 seater theatre in the Seefeld area of Zurich City, plus contributions to theatre festivals & smaller productions



International societies 

NODA - The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) was founded in 1899 "to protect and advance the interests of Operatic and Dramatic Art, and of Societies engaged therein." It has a membership of some 2,500 amateur societies and 3,000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country's leading professional theatres to tiny village halls.

Geneva Area Information 

Why Geneva? - The Economic Promotion Office promotion web site. Includes lots of information about the region around Geneva, city guides and maps.

Radio 74 - RADIO 74 is a bilingual, educational FM radio broadcasting station, oriented towards news and serious topics with thought-provoking conversation and interviews rather than entertainment. The station is characterised by its informative, dignified presentations and warm, pleasant manner.

London Theatre Guide - You'll find everything you need to know about London theatre - all the news, what to see and how to book - here at the official site of the Society of London Theatre.

New York Theatre Experience Inc. - The New York Theatre Experience, Inc. is a New York State nonprofit corporation whose mission is to: promote awareness of the theatre locally, nationally and globally; increase theatre attendance; encourage public participation in the advancement of theatre by attendance and contributions both as a volunteer and by donor gift; act as a conduit between and among the various aspects of the theatrical community to facilitate easier communication and higher visibility.

TimeOut - Time Out takes you straight to the action with city guides to 118 of the world's geatest cities. They review thousands of the best restaurants, clubs and bars, assess the hotels and show you the finest sights and shows.



Others 

Performing Rights Society - Collects license fees for the public performance and broadcast of musical works. It distributes this money to its members - writers and publishers of music.

The Aria Database - An actively growing collection of information about opera and operatic arias. Contains basic information, aria texts, translations, MIDI files. Currently 1278 Arias - 170 Operas - 60 Composers - 381 Translations - 1027 Aria Texts - 223 MIDI files.

Shows for amateur Performances - Good source of ideas for Amateur performances. Show lists, synopses, casting, musical requirements etc. (It even tells us how many fiddlers we need in the pit!)

Musical Theatre International - Another source of information concering worldwide productions.

Glossary of Musical Terms - An A to Z of musical terms set out in alphabetical order. Tells the musical "Phillistines", (like me) what the "lollipops" on the "farm gate" mean.

Feats - The Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies is an annual competition between English-speaking amateur theatrical groups resident in mainland Europe to see who can put on the best production
