Synopsis
Strephon, an Arcadian shepherd, is the son of the fairy Iolanthe and her husband the Lord Chancellor. Marriage with a mortal is a fairyland sin punishable by death or banishment and Iolanthe has spent the last 25 years in banishment. The Fairy Queen, at the request of all the fairies, pardons Iolanthe and they all learn that she has a son, and that he wishes to marry Phyllis, an Arcadian shepherdess and a ward in Chancery. The Lord Chancellor (not knowing Strephon is his son) has refused permission for Phyllis and Strephon to be married. Iolanthe comforts her son, and seeing Strephon frequenting such a young woman, Phyllis cannot believe it is his mother. In a fit of jealousy she offers to marry one of two peers - and she doesn’t care which! Strephon asks the fairies to help him and is sent into Parliament where he upsets things considerably. Ultimately Phyllis asks Strephon to forgive her, and all ends happily.
